Support Spectrum on North Texas Giving Day (Thursday September 23)

UPDATE: MATCHING FUNDS! As added incentive to contribute on NTXGD, we have already received a commitment of up to $250 in matching funds (and there may be more where that came from), so your donation will go even farther! Spectrum Chamber Music Society is excited to participate in our very first North Texas Giving Day this Thursday September 23! Here are some reasons to give to Spectrum on NTXGD: —Since 1986, Spectrum has entertained North Texas audiences with a concert series that features an eclectic mix of 18th-21st Century chamber music performed by musicians of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and friends. Wanna see everything we’ve played over the last 35 years?…

As Executive Director of Spectrum Chamber Music Society, I want to welcome you to our 35th season of presenting outstanding chamber music performances featuring musicians of the Fort Worth Symphony and friends! “ONE GRAND NIGHT”, Indeed

On May 27, 2021, Spectrum Chamber Music Society presented our first major fundraising event, “ONE GRAND NIGHT”, featuring Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Music Director Laureate Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducting an exceptional wind ensemble in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s epic Gran Partita. Despite the lingering remnants of the COVID pandemic still around us, we took  a chance on the miracles of medical science (i.e., vaccinations) and presented this fundraiser as our first in-person event since the pandemic shut everything down in Spring 2020. While the turnout was understandably less than what we would have expected before the pandemic, we were bowled over by the enthusiasm of those who did attend. There was electricity in the…

    501(c)(3) And Loving It!

Just in time for us to start promoting our spring fundraising event, “One Grand Night”, we recently got the news from the IRS that we have been approved as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization! This status means you can write off your donations to Spectrum! And that’s just the beginning…. We plan to use our status to apply for grant funds which we will use both to continue producing the kinds of concerts you have come to expect from Spectrum and to present new and exciting programs in the coming years. This announcement as well as the formation of a Board of Directors is part of an exciting period of…

Exciting News About Spectrum Chamber Music Society

We are very pleased to announce a new chapter in the evolution of the Spectrum Chamber Music Society. We recently formed our very first Board of Directors (learn more about the members of the board here), we have incorporated with the State of Texas, and we have submitted our application to become a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization! This move will allow us to apply for grants and other financial support, but it also means that as of now, all donations are tax-deductible. [Note: Although we are not officially a 501(c)(3) yet, once we are accepted, the tax-deductible provision will be backdated to our incorporation in early November.] Don’t worry, once we…

Welcome to the Fall Season of Spectrum

Spectrum Chamber Music Society is truly excited about our fall concerts. We weren’t going to let COVID-19 get the best of us, so we have gone “livestream-only” for the time being. I’ve heard from many of you who saw our first livestream-only event in June, and the general consensus is that it turned out great! A lot of the credit for our success goes to the dedication and professionalism of the people at First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth. That’s why we are thrilled to come back to FUMCFW for our October 5 livestream-only event, featuring shorter—but every bit as powerful—string quartets and the Clarinet Quintet by Carl Maria…

Spectrum Goes From Live to Livestream

Well, this isn’t exactly the way we thought we were going to finish our 34th season of sharing outstanding chamber music performances with the Fort Worth community. But we are using this unexpected twist of events to try something very new and different. For the first time ever, Spectrum Chamber Music Society is going livestream, in an event we’re calling, SPECTRUM CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY PRESENTS: “A SIX-FEET-APART CONCERT” Programwise, this concert is pretty much like all our usual Spectrum concerts, but out of respect for the need for social distancing during this COVID-19 health crisis, this time there will be no in-house audience. Instead, we will be livestreaming on several…

“Why Is There So Much Viola on Spectrum?”

…is what you might be asking yourself when you come to our concerts. “Sure, it’s a beautiful instrument,” you’re likely also telling yourself, “but there are so many other great instruments out there. Why is the viola so prominent?” These are all really good points, especially the one about the viola being a beautiful instrument. The reasons for the huge surplus of chamber music with viola go far beyond the fact that the director of the series is a violist (though it doesn’t hurt). The viola has traditionally served an important but overlooked role in the orchestra. It provides some of the inner harmony in the music, which is an…

Interview with Till MacIvor Meyn, Composer of “Flights of Fancy”

On October 1, 2019 (with an encore presentation on October 7), Spectrum Chamber Music Society will present the world premiere of Till MacIvor Meyn’s new string quartet, Flights of Fancy, which he composed specifically for our series. The piece will be performed by Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra violinists Michael Shih and Molly Baer, violist Dan Sigale, and cellist Keira Fullerton. In preparation for the premiere, I sat down with the composer to talk about his piece, how coming up with a creative title affects the way he composes music, and what he gets out of working interactively with the musicians he writes for.   Dan Sigale: Tell us about your new piece, Flights…
